PFAS pesticides and groundwater
28 februari 2025

In recent years, the use of PFAS pesticides has increased. Vewin (association of Dutch water companies) is concerned that these plant protection products may threaten the quality of groundwater as a source of drinking water. Vewin therefore commissioned CLM to conduct an exploratory study of this potential problem. The CLM report ‘PFAS pesticides and groundwater’ gives the results of the exploratory study. Within the group of PFAS pesticides, fungicides stand out. Furthermore the environmental impact on groundwater of the PFAS pesticides increased significantly in recent years. The drinking water guideline which was established for PFAS by RIVM (4.4 ng/l, expressed as PFOA equivalents) is more strict compared to the drinking water standard for pesticides and for relevant metabolites (100 ng/l). Vewin has brought the report under attention of the Dutch and European governements and organisations like Ctgb. Currently CLM conducts a follow up study to identify use and risks of the PFAS pesticides for several crops in a number of provences in the Netherlands.
